What happened to the Monster Database? - By: Desireful
In December of 2007 and before, the monster database had absolutely no activity. I, Desireful, decided to change that. I posted a blog entry to get a team of people to help me bring it back together. I didn't tell them what it was for though. (View the blog entry here.) After I had all 5 participants, that I thought would stay active, I sent out "The PM" which explained what the project was. Only one person didn't reply. After I had assembled a team, it was time to get to work.
The original plan was to get about 250 monsters on a private invisionfree forum I set up, then on Sal's birthday, send it to him as a present. After we got started, I decided to let Sal know what we were doing, and if it was okay to continue. When he got back to me, we had about 10 monsters on the forum. He said that it was fine, and that he was going to discuss it with the staff to see if our team could moderate and clean up the forum.
About a month later, Sal finally sent me a PM. He gave us the mod powers, and after fixing a few glitches we had (like not being able to move topics) we were set to go. I rounded everyone up on MSN to have a DB meeting. I told the team that we all had to put in an equal share of work. Obviously everyone did it - for a while. We were about at the halfway point of moving the submissions in the letter topics, to their own topics when the activity started to drop off. It never came back. I contacted Sal about this several times, and I got two more people on the team, and those people removed. (Well, with Mikey's help.) Currently there are three members on the team: Mikey, Matt T, and I.
You may have noticed that the MDB layout is different from the other database forums. Mikey is the one who asked Sal to change the forum layout. He proposed that there should be a Pending Submissions forum and an Accepted Submissions forum. Within a few days, everything was changed to that format, and it still is. We are still in the slow progress of moving submissions to their own topics, but the team is really close to being done.
Recently out of curiosity, Mikey PMed Sal. He was wondering if the team would be able to help with the on-site database. Mikey surprised me with the answer. It was yes!
So just by a person wanting to help bring something back, helped Sal's in the long run. Remember that the databases and the site are in need of a little extra help! If you have a new idea remember to suggest it, if you want to help, start helping out!
