Mod For A Day - By: Jamster (Special Thanks To Mrcsupertrain)
Without decent, respectable moderators, Sal's RuneScape Forum would descend into unorganised chaos, as nobody could enforce the rules on others. But, what would you give to become one? And, if you somehow made the grade, what would you do with your amazing powers?
Sal's Newspaper gave you the opportunity to write in and tell the world exactly what you think! The competition topic in the 'Scape Lounge attracted many entries, which were quickly narrowed down to a couple of favourites. Out of these, we chose the winners, lilshufan4lyfe, Sofee, and Entrility!
Lilshufan4lyfe: 3rd Place
If i could be a mod for a day i wouldnt go ban daniel, or add pictures of Hannah Montana to Mrc's blog with superglue, i would make Merch Gwyar of sals community her own pip, this pip would be one of a kind and show the person merch gwyar really is. Merch although she doesnt post much in the regular forums blogs almost daily and is host to one of the biggest clan chats next to sals, Canting Away is home to many of sals users who dont find sals their cup of tea, or as some would say "they die a little bit each time they enter" lol =). Canting Away and the welcoming arms of merch gwyar are also a safe haven from real life, although this does not affect what she does on sals her attitude is the same here. Her blog is fun and well written and full of her days adventures from mining clay to make teletabs to taking on revanants in the wildy she makes it entertaining and takes you away from real life into her wild stories.
On a more serious note merch is a good listener and a great friend and is there to help you out in all your hard times. Late 2007 i lost a family member very close to me and merch was there to comfort me and listen to all my issues. Merch held a huge election to make sure the generals for her chat were chosen fairly and honestly and stressed herself out and stretched herself to her limits to make sure it all went well.
Merch Gwyar wouldnt be just a distinguished member on sals she would be the only member of a pip group titled "Onlines Greatest Person" or something along those lines. Because she truly deserves to be recognized for what she has done
This is what i would do if i was mod for a day.
Sofee: 2nd Place
Log in Sal's, see that I'm a Moderator, log off, tear of my monitor and throw it out the window, and scream out loud, 'MUMMY!! I'M A MOD!! YAHOOO!!' Rush out of the door, run out, screaming, 'I'M A MOD WOOOOHOOO!!'. I'd run to the airport, fly to Mt. Everest, climb like crazy, still shouting 'I'M A MOD WOOO!!' I get to the top; and jump off, still saying, 'OH MY YEAAHHH!!!!' BOOM! Flat on the face. Try to scramble back home, but my mod rank expired. *Cries like crazy*.
And... The overall winner: Entrility!
Oh goody, I got mod powers. What'd I do? Takover evil.gif
New world (forum) order! As a 'hidden mod', the current mods wouldn't know that I had any powers. That's the key to my plan. I'd start off doing some tests, mainly to see if the topic will appear as "edited by Entrility" from closing, locking, or stickying a topic. The next thing I would do is declare through an account on another computer that the forum shall now be ruled by a hidden mod. The message will be as follows:
'This forum shall be taken over by a new, glorious leader. If the admins or Sal fail to follow my requests, disciplinary actions will occur. My first request is for this account to be made a root admin. You have 5 days.'
Now, I would continue to delete all the posts in the more irriplaceable forums, such as the Guides in Progress or Goals and Logs forums, until my request would be met. As a followup, I would delete a few blogs, particularly the popular ones, including mine (this to help eliminate me from the list of suspects), to prove my supreme power. Next, I would take Sal's password, and use that to 'tweak' a few of his features (as well as the moderators), so it is impossible for him to track my IP address correctly. In addition, I would make it seem like the forum was continueing as normal, and that he had deleted the root admin account the he'd just made. On my new root admin account, I would make a new usergroup, a copy of a root admin, into a faux forum member. Now, I would hijack someone's account, such as Richman, and make it appear as if HE was the one who obtained mod powers and got this far. At this point, I would use his account to rewrite the rules in my favor. From here, the game will be over. Sal would eventually realize, and overhaul the forum, and fix the 'hidden mod' glitch. At that point, the only thing I'd've gained would be a much lower member number, and a great secret.
Of course, it's not all about the competition. We have some special mentions who drew our judges' eye, even if their work wasn't quite as good!
Best Comedic Value: Agent F
I would PM Common Sense and tell him of the problem because I know that moderation actions are logged and I would get banned if I used any that I shouldn't already be able to use.
Best Storyline: Corbly
What I would do if I found myself a mod:
I would have some fun with my new powers, nothing too bad, just a few perm. bans =). Then, when an Administrator asks, "Hey, what are you doing?", I just respond with, "Nothing much," and hit "Instant Ban"=P. After finding that I couldn't ban an administrator, I would probabally run for cover. Even so, my life on the forums would most likely be over after that incident =P.
But, this wasn't just for fun, hopefully it actually made you think. As much as there were some funny ones, many people seriously thought about the consequences and decisions of moderating the forum, something which the current team of twelve, plus forum admins, and, of course, Sal himself, have to do every day. Beyond what you would do if you found out you were a moderator, what would you do to keep that role? The job looks easy from our end, but surely the amount of work for them must be huge. And, what's more - they do it without pay! The mods deserve our respect. Will you give them yours?
